Chapter Twelve - In which Ezra admits something

Iwoke when Tate got up in the morning, and I lazily watched him get dressed and clean his face.

Zeb got up shortly after and I managed to doze for a while longer. Finally I got out of bed, washed myself and pulled on a soft white shirt and short brown trousers.

I wish we had been able to go clothes shopping and not just for Ora, I thought sadly. I am getting heartily sick of these plain clothes from home.

I sought out some breakfast from the galley and went up onto deck, eating the bread and cheese I found there. I glanced up at the heights of the main mast and saw a long black tail hanging down from the crow’s nest. I couldn’t suppress a shudder.

“How can he stand to stay up there?” I murmured to myself. My heart thumped dully with fear, the idea of being up there compounded with the terrible thought of Zeb falling down and hurting or killing himself. He hadn’t been human for a long time, but I had a real affection for him. Perhaps because I’d had such affection for him as a cat and he still acted largely the same.

Aside from the talking of course, and the fascinating things he could do with a human body.

I shook my head and looked around for Ezra, quelling the stirring in my groin as I thought of Zeb’s firm chest and the… rest of him.

Ezra stood a little back from the helm and Tate had his hands on the wheel. They seemed to be talking about something serious.

“Too much cover,” Tate said, shaking his head.

“Cover can work to hide us as well as it hides our enemies,” Ezra said.

Ezra noticed me and did a sort of head nod greeting so I approached. Things on the ship were sort of unclear in terms of hierarchy and who should know what - I hadn’t been sure if I should interrupt the First Mate and the Captain speaking. Even if they were my lovers.

“Hello,” I said.

“Good morning, Gideon,” Tate said, smiling easily. I eyed Ezra who gave me a brief smile. “Did you want something?”

“Oh, uh, yes, I suppose I wanted to talk to Ezra,” I said, stiffly. My discomfort at the thought of talking about emotions with Ezra was making me go all preparatory school formal again. I shook my head at myself. “If you’re not too busy, I mean.”

“Not busy,” Tate said. “Take him away.”

Ezra rolled his eyes at Tate and folded his arms. “What’s that supposed to mean?”

“It means go off and do whatever it is you need to do,” Tate said. He chuckled. “What on Earth else would it mean?”

“Come on, pet,” Ezra said. He unfolded his arms and stalked away. I widened my eyes at Tate who shrugged and smiled.

“Enjoy,” Tate said.

My stomach clenched again but I turned to hurry after Ezra, who was headed below deck. He led me to the spot by the brig where
